Of Economic Woes, Fears, And Hunger

Sat, 19 Apr 2008 14:49:51 PDT
In catching up on economic news this week, I've noticed a trend toward real world reports. It's as though a few in the media have awakened to the fact that a large segment of our population is struggling to just get by -- which for regular folks isn't exactly news, but it's a welcome change from the usual indifference.

Paul Jacob on “the little party that could”

Paul Jacob on “the little party that could” Posted by Thomas L. Knapp --- April 20th, 2008 Over at American conservatism’s home on the web, Town hall, Paul Jacob has a look at the Libertarian Party: I] prefer to think of the persistence of the Libertarian Party as charming, not pathetic. Everything is stacked against them. The two parties in charge have made sure that it is very hard for “minor parties” to challenge them. Just getting on the ballot is no picnic. The Libertarians have spent

Cycles in Fashion Trends

Some things travel from one generation to another. They stay with us for a while and then are replaced by the new coil of fashion. Sure thing, they bring the fashion of 2008 with them, but original design and form remain the same. Here are some typical examples.

Sunday Bookchat

We all know the drill. Some ostensibly left-wing figure — think Christopher Hitchens or Martin Amis — loudly announces he’s given up his liberal ways and goes flouncing off to the right side of the aisle, where his work becomes steadily crankier and less interesting. (David Mamet has just begun this process; several weeks ago he published a column titled “Why I Am No Longer a Brain-Dead Liberal,” a title that proved only half right.) And then there is former Republican strategist Kevin Philli

Start small

This weekend’s Life 3.0 column: These days, it seems harder to avoid “green” products than it is to find them. Everything from construction material to accessories (a biodegradable umbrella) and from automobiles to pet products makes being an eco-friendly consumer almost as easy as finding a Dunkin Donuts in the Capital Region. Earth Day has been around for nearly 40 years — since 1970 — but the real environmental push has seemed to surge in recent years. The Toyota Prius hit the U.S. in 200

McCain overcomes rank-and-file concerns (DAVID PAUL KUHN, 4/20/08, Politico) Although John McCain's candidacy is still viewed with suspicion by many conservative leaders, polling suggests he has overcome the concerns of rank-and-file conservatives: McCain isn't viewed more unfavorably by conservative voters today than George W. Bush was at this point in the 2000 election cycle. In the latest CBS News/New York Times poll, 18 percent of conservatives said they have an unfavorable view of McCain

Enlightenment: You and Me and China make Three

Sat, 19 Apr 2008 22:45:21 PDT
I have been reading the book: The Writing on the Wall. Mr. Will Hutton is the author. The book is billed as a look at what makes China tick and what the west should do about it. I chose it on the strength of the reviews as I wanted to learn more about China in regard to our discussions concerning globalization. I also wanted to hear a voice not from the US. Mr. Hutton is very established in the economic world in England. Maybe he is their Mr. Krugman? You can read a summary regarding the subj
